Practical Sexual Education

  • What is your topic and why did you choose it to research and write about? (Why is it important to you?)
    • The topic of this essay is on the importance practical sexual education for teenagers. Many teenagers have sex without proper protection (condoms and/or other forms of birth control) because they have not been properly informed. They may be scared to talk to their parents because they fear getting into trouble, or they may have tried to talk to their parents and were turned down, being told they are too young to have sex. This topic is important to me because when my mother was thirteen, she tried to talk to her mother about getting on birth control. She was told she was too young to have sex and dismissed. She chose to have sex any way and became pregnant with me less than a year later.

  •  If your readers want to get involved themselves, what do you recommend? What can they do to take action and make change involving your topic?
    • I recommend to parents they speak with their teenagers with an open mind about sex. I understand that many people promote abstinence only as a way to avoid the situation of sex altogether but it is not realistic. Teenagers seem to mature at a younger rate than before and if they have unprotected sex, could easily become pregnant or get a STD. I recommend that if they are having a hard time with speaking to their teen, they visit the health department where there are counselors who can help with that type of thing. There are also websites dedicated to helping both parents and teenagers gain knowledge on this topic.
